Definition of Compound Sentences (Parallelism)

The definition of a compound sentence is a sentence that has at least 2 independent clauses. It means 2 or more clauses could be the compound sentence. How about parallelism compound sentences? So, parallelism compound sentences are compound sentences that have parallel characters. What are they? Here is the explanation :

1. Use conjunction with a comma

Firstly and the most popular is to use conjunction with a comma. The conjunctions are: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. You can remember those well by F.A.N.B.O.Y.S.

Example :

  • Marriage is not only about love, but it is also about the struggle in life.
  • Marriage is not only about love: 1st independent clause

It is also about the struggle in life: 2nd independent clause. Both of the 2 independent clauses we gathered by using conjunction (but) and a comma to be a parallelism compound sentence

2. Use a semicolon

To gather its clauses, We can use a semicolon as the familiar option.

Example :

  • Adimas, My Father; Melda, My Mother; and Pluto, the dog.

In this case, a semicolon is used to gather the separate list items with commas. If We want to merge about 2 clauses, this semicolon is possible.

Example :

  • It was warm; They enjoyed some ice tea on the balcony.

At this section, it was warm as the 1st clause and they enjoyed some ice tea on the balcony as the 2nd clause could be a parallel compound sentence by using semicolon

3. Use a colon

To combine its clauses, a colon is popular enough for parallelism compound sentences. Example :

I have blessed family members, those are father, mother, grandma, aunt, and sister.

In this case, a colon is used to merge 2 or more clauses by introducing them for parallel compound sentences.
